Icebreaker questions for teams and meetings

Over 500 questions sorted by topic — the same ones ProstoRetro uses in the warm-up round of its retrospectives. Pick one for your next meeting, or let the app pick for you.

How to use an icebreaker

An icebreaker has one job: get every person to say something in the first few minutes. Someone who has already spoken once finds it much easier to speak again, and a short, easy question moves everyone's attention from the last thing they were doing to this meeting.

Pick by situation: a brand-new team does well with get-to-know-you questions, a large call with would you rather (short answers, quick rounds), and a regular team meeting with questions about work.

Why retrospectives start with a warm-up

A retrospective asks people to be candid about what is not working. That is hard to do cold. After a minute of talking about the worst gift they ever received, people write their first card faster and say more in the discussion. Teams that skip the warm-up often find the first ten minutes of the retro doing its job instead, only less well. Our guide on how to run a great retro covers the rest of the meeting.

How the warm-up works in ProstoRetro

When you create a retro in ProstoRetro, the icebreaker round is switched on by default. The board opens with a question and the name of the person who answers it. The app picks people at random, and everyone gets a turn before anyone is asked twice. The facilitator clicks Next question to move on.

Questions come from this list, and each team works its way through it, so the same question does not come up again at the next retro. While someone answers, others can drop pictures and GIFs onto the board — from their computer, the clipboard or a link. If your team would rather play than talk, the facilitator can switch the round to Scribbles, a drawing game: one person draws a secret word and the others guess it in the chat.

Run a retro with icebreakers — it's free

Then the retro carries on with whichever retrospective template you chose. The full list of questions is below.
